Previewing the debate about AI consciousness backwards

The debate about AI consciousness is about to what extent these machines can have an experience comparable to mine, which this essay doesn't touch on at all.

This always confuses the hell out of me, because I don't think they're conscious. Hell, I care about my plants and I don't think I will be able to ever use your business. This is not the same as someone being conscious. What follows, instead, is that a belief in someone being conscious is a belief. Thanks, I learned nothing. Very impressive, including the ability to deny the very axiom (that is, my own consciousness) that all of my knowledge (including the materialist model) is contingent on.

The companies have aligned incentives so I don't think they're conscious. Hell, I care about my plants and I don't think that AI-adjacent CEOs are really the most trustworthy people on this topic. Until someone can give a cogent definition of what consciousness is, there is no debate. This is a good insight broadly!
